Food poison OR norovirus???

Food poisoned yet again.

Just 2 nights ago I was struck down by the most terrible food poisoning of my life. Several hours after eating at a well respected BBQ place, I turned ill. Oh so ill.

The night was filled with fevers, vomiting, sweaty cold chills, some other terrible symptoms and quite a bit of sobbing. I could keep nothing down. I could keep nothing in. All I wanted was water but one sip would send me straight back to the bathroom to throw it back up. I was so dehydrated, my lips began to crack and peel throughout the night. The acidic vomit only made them worse.

During the 8+ hours of hell, I couldn't even comprehend taking a remedy for the illness. I just wanted whatever demon was in me OUT. As my insides emptied and I got woozier, I knew I had to do something to turn my state around.

I began thinking back to my knowledge of natural cures and home remedies and I am so glad that I did. Things turned around almost immediately after I began taking some of these easy cures, you might even already have some of these in your own kitchen. If not, send a friend to the store! These quick cures much are better options than any medicine you could buy or over-priced hospital visit.

UPDATE!!! February 5th, 2012

After the current news of a school in San Francisco shutting down due to 300 students coming down with the stomach bug Norovirus, I have reevaluated my illness and now believe I may have caught the same sickness. Plus, my boyfriend ended up severely ill with very similar symptoms just a few days later while we were traveling down Pacific Coast Highway. The moment he first threw up I made him gulp down ACV and his illness was dramatically less devastating than mine. Food poisoning or Norovirus, these remedies definitely helped us and speed up our recovery time.

Apple Cider Vinegar is my #1 cure all!

In the light of morning, I remembered my favorite cure all, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! Seriously, I find a new use for ACV almost every day. I wash my hair with it, I bathe my pup with it, make yummy detox elixirs, the list is endless. Apple Cider Vinegar has amazing microbial properties. It will quickly kill any nasty, unwanted bacteria hiding in your gut.

The key is to drink the ACV straight. It is most effective if undiluted. Also, use organic ACV. Bragg's is widely known as the very BEST brand available.

Silly me, I mixed 2 tablespoons with a little bit of water and quickly threw it back up, though I was also simultaneously noticing my physical state improve. I took a few tablespoons of straight apple cider vinegar later that hour and did not throw up again. After nearly 10 hours of vomiting, things were beginning to look up.

Do you...?

Do you enjoy making your own home remedies and natural cures?

GINGER WORKS!

I could barely stand the thought of putting a piece of food anywhere near my face. I had to do it though. Typically, I love ginger. It's so spicy and stimulating, you can feel it dissolving into you the moment it hits your mouth. On that day, it was a little hard for me to handle.

How to eat it

  • Chopped off the smallest nub from the fresh ginger root chewed on it. It will be intense but it will also dramatically improve your situation.
  • Shred fresh ginger in water, sip this S-L-O-W-L-Y. I also put some small pieces of ginger in water and chewed on them randomly throughout the day.
  • Ginger ale is amazing and satisfying after a long day of malnourishment - try to find an organic ginger ale without artificial ingredients and lots of sugar.

After drinking ACV and eating some ginger root - I was no longer throwing up and was now beginning to believe that I might actually live.

Fresh Coconut! Yum!

This was such an amazing treat!

Coconut water is so good for you. It felt so nourishing and comforting after all of my stomach trauma. We buy the coconut in the shell, which makes it a little difficult to open if you are sick. Have a friend do it. I definitely didn't have the strength. The water is very refreshing and helps to rehydrate you quickly. If you stomach can handle it, eat the coconut meat. It is delicious and very gentle on your tummy.

Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea has long been known as a stomach soother. The warmth and tingling menthol helped ease away my final pains from my sickness. The heat of the tea comforted me after such a terrible day. There really is nothing like a cup of tea to brighten your spirits.

Probiotics to the rescue!

Kombucha Wonder Drink, Asian Pear and Ginger, 8.4-Ounce Can (Pack of 24)
Amazon Price: $28.31
List Price: $36.80

Probiotics

Probiotics help to replenish the healthy bacteria in your intestines. You can consumed them from a variety of drinks, pills, yogurts and powders.

I choose a coconut probiotic drink that was slightly fizzy and wonderful.

And remember!!

Always try to use organic fruits, veggies and herbs. You should especially pick organics while using food as a natural cure. The last thing you want in your body when you are ill is some toxic pesticide that has contaminated your produce.

In the end...

I made it. I lived through this terrible sickness but time has warped and I do not remember everything exactly. I do know that these foods and drinks helped my recovery immensely. Nearly 48 hours after it all begin, I am able to sit here with enough energy to write about it. I definitely think I would still be very ill if I would not have taken that first sip of ACV.

Have you ever...?

Have you ever had food poisoning?

  • Luckily, no!
  • Erm.. yes. 1x
  • Erm.. yes. 2x
  • Erm.. yes. 3x or more.

I like all of these 'cures', even though I've never had food poisoning. I know that ginger is good for tummy troubles-- and candied or crystallized ginger can be an occasional sweet treat that is also good for your health.

Sabrani44 - They definitely helped! My sister actually began to feel ill last night (with very similar symptoms) and I had her gulp down some ACV RIGHT AWAY. She woke up feeling fresh and nausea-free!

SherryDigital, I am so glad you got through that OK. Sounds horrible. I did not realize that apple cider vinegar could help. Good to know.

Just a note about Ginger, I almost killed my husband with it. He had a really bad stomach flu. Couldn't keep anything down. So, I did what my mom would have done. I bought him saltine crackers and real gingerale (the kind with real ginger in it). He is diabetic but his blood sugar was going low from being so sick so the sugar in the gingerale made sense to me. HOWEVER, instead of stabilizing his bloodsugar and calming his stomach, his bloodsugar kept plummeting lower and lower, even with the sugar. SO, I looked ginger up on the internet and discovered that it LOWERS blood sugar! YIKES! We learned the hard way that diabetics must be careful with ginger. Goes without saying, we stopped the gingerale and he thankfully has recovered.

Sinea Pies - very interesting! I had heard that about ginger but didn't even think to mention it. Great job researching and figuring out how to cure what ailed him. I have also recently discovered a love for Oil of Oregano and its many cures.
