A look into our alternative to Black Friday

While other residents of the Southern California were busy fighting for discounted electronics and getting pepper sprayed; Kevin and I were getting our feet wet and exploring magical tidal pools. I had read briefly about the Malibu tidepools but didn't know exactly where to find them. Here's what we found.

Palisades Park

We headed towards the coast and stopped first at Palisades Park in Santa Monica. This cliff-side sanctuary offers breathtaking views of the Santa Monica pier to the south and sights of Malibu to the north. Grassy areas with succulents and foliage wind threw the pathways on top of the cliffs. People jog, bike, practice yoga and read. Dogs walk, socialize and have plenty of room to play. The part is roughly 26 acres large. This place was a wonderful surprise and a much needed pit stop. I plan on spending many more sunny afternoons in this little retreat from the city. Also, they have free wifi within the park grounds.

An extremely low tide with lots of little creatures to find.
An extremely low tide with lots of little creatures to find.

After the Palisades Park we drove north up Pacific Coast Highway into Malibu. We drove about 5 miles in and couldn't find it. I was getting hungry, antsy and knew that low tide was happening at the very moment. We decided to turn back around. As soon as we did, we realized the tide pools were right behind us. There was free street parking literally right in front of the rocks. The tide pools are about 4.5 miles in once you start driving into the Malibu area. Keep your eyes open for rocks peaking out of the water on the edge of the beach.

The lone lobster hunter searched through the rocks during the whole hour we were there. Make sure to check the tide charts before heading out. There won't be much to look at if you come during high tide.

What to bring

  • thick shoes that can get wet - old sneakers, rainboots
  • an alternative dry pair of shoes
  • beach towels
  • blanket for lounging
  • sunblock & sunglasses
  • water & snacks

Remember not to touch the animals. Also, please do not remove any animals, shells or rocks from the tide pools.

What We Found!

  • Dozens of starfish! Big, fat, pink, orange and red ones!
  • Sea Anemones-a-plenty!
  • A tiny purple sea urchin
  • Little fish swimming in the pools
  • Lots of shrimp
  • Hermit crabs of all shapes and sizes
  • A few dead lobsters
  • Chilly waters
  • Neon sunsets

Our experience there was unbelievable. It was a fabulous way to spend Black Friday without all that holiday-consumer pressure. All I dream about now is exploring tide pools and spending every special occasion at a new one. It sounds like a lovely new tradition to me. In fact, that is exactly what we are going to do for this Christmas. I'm busy now planning a beach picnic for Christmas day. Does anyone have any recipe ideas or favorite beach spots near Orange County?

I know Leslie! My boyfriend and I are from Florida and there is nothing close to this kind of beauty there. We actually just found another, even better tidepool. I will be posting more pictures tonight! :)
